III International Biennale for Young Architects Leonardo Award 2009

17-19 September Minsk, Belarus

From 17th to 19th of September 2009 in Minsk, Belarus, it was organised by the Belarusian Union of Architects the III International Biennale for Young Architects Leonardo Award 2009, for the first time under the auspices of the UIA. This opportunity gave to the event a real international character with the participation of more than 25 countries from the UIA Regions I, II and IV with more than 400 entries. This event took place during the VIII National Festival Architecture Minsk 2009.

The entries on both categories for the Leonardo Award 2009, projects and constructions, were rich of ideas in innovative, environmental friendly and accessible solutions. The enthusiasm and the capacity of the young architects to face the complexity of architectural and urban planning projects, from the smallest to the biggest scale were very impressive and the jury members expressed their satisfaction for the quality of the entries.

 

During the joint session which took place in the Minsk City Hall the 17th of September among the International Union of Architects (UIA), the XVII Coordinating Council of the International Association of Unions of Architects (IAUA) and the young architects participants of the III Leonardo Award, it was discussed many interesting issues concerning education, access to the profession and promotion of the young architects works. In this meeting UIA was represented by Lisa Siola, Vice President Region II, with the participation of Andrey Kaftanov, UIA Council member and Tomaz Kancler, Director of the UIA Competitions Commission, and many of the presidents or representatives of the UIA Member Sections of the UIA Region II (Hungary, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Belarus, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Georgia, Greece, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Serbia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and the none member Moldova).

The host of this important biennale and festival was Alexander Korbut, as President of the Belarusian Union of Architects (BUA) and also President of International Association of Unions of Architects (IAUA).
